Environment created own environment in form of villages, towns

Environment is where we live; it’s our surroundings consisting a forest, rivers, mountains
or a desert or combination of these. Air, water and sunlight are the natural
elements supporting life in all these places for plants and other organisms.
Today most of the mankind modified theses natural settings and created own
environment in form of villages, towns and cities. They have developed their
own social structure with science and technology, but even most of food we
generate is with help of nature, we get water from natural resources; temperature,
wind, rainfall are the crucial factors shaping the life. Thus our daily life is
inevitably linked with our environment.

We are so much depending on nature that we can’t survive without
protecting it. In many traditions environment is referred as ‘Mother nature’. Those cultures
practiced to protect their environment while fulfilling their living needs from
it. Human race is a nomad by nature, just like other animals they used to have
their food from nature in form of fruits, roots and hunting. It served their
need of clothes by providing animal leather and leaves. Same way the shelter
was also provided by nature in form of caves and trees. Living organisms desire
to survive. The survival of humans depends on their capacity to adapt to
changing local conditions, such as climate and the availability of resources.
As the mankind evolved and started growing food, they started settling down
where most of the needs for living were fulfilled by nature, like water bodies.
Farming and animal husbandry doesn’t change the food habits much but there was radical change
in shelter during this evolving process. This was the origin of construction
and architecture. Primarily the shelters were built to get protection from
harsh weather condition then progressed to store excess grown food and cattle
sheds. All these construction was done by families or communities using the
locally available materials like mud, stone, timber, bamboo etc. Construction
techniques were also simultaneously developed depending on materials used; this
all together gave rise to vernacular architecture.

 All the living organisms affect
the environment but humans are worst, he can alter his environment for his convince
to fulfill his needs. In the beginning there was shelter which was constructed
by material available locally which required maintenance but nature friendly
and used to disintegrate naturally without harming the environment, but for
more comfort and no maintenance new materials were researched which harmed the
environment in their generation process and hard to disintegrate naturally.  He cut the forest and used land for growing
food through farming, to have more, harmful fertilizers and pesticides were
used. Artificially created new strains of domestic animals and crop, created
dams on rivers to irrigate farmlands and develop industries disturbing the
ecosystem. Industrial development and intensive agriculture satisfies needs of
growing population but uses large amount of natural resources like water,
minerals, petroleum products, woods etc. Non renewable resources such as oil
which will be exhausted in future if we continue consuming them without thought
of coming generations. Renewable sources such as timber and water which can be
used but can be regenerated by natural process. These will also exhaust if we
continue using them faster than their natural regeneration. We cut forest and
use timber for construction and firewood, if it’s faster than re
growth and regeneration of trees the supply of wood cannot be restored. Loss of
forest not only depletes the forest of its resources such as timber but also
affect the water cycle. As intact forest controls the temperature and makes the
clods rain, more over it acts like a sponge which holds water in rainy season
and releases slowly over the drier periods. In addition deforestation leads to
floods in monsoon and dry rivers after the rains.

In today’s globalization era
whole earth has become a family, due to easy ways of communication and
transport. Data transfer happening faster and faster bringing world closer.
Idea generated at on corner of world becomes reality at other corner within
moment. But in this fast communication, essence of real physical world is
losing, under the name of modernization and contemporary style, and present
natural environment is vanishing. Definition of sustainability is changing
which used to be the core of vernacular architecture. All levels of society
want to progress but adopting something new which is not meant for particular
region is not progress. Especially in India, we are losing our cultural
identity due to this and time has come to redevelop our own forgotten
architecture and construction techniques by adopting and merging the elements
of both worlds together for sustainable future. We are following western
techniques and materials irrespective of they are suitable to our climatic
conditions or not.
