Food is any substance that a organism consumes to provide nutritional support. There are many types of food in the world. Not every food that we consume is good for our health. In this essay, I am writing about things such as: What are the most important food groups, How you can maintain a healthy life and The function of water.

WHAT ARE THE 5 MOST IMPORTANT FOOD GROUPS?

The first five important food groups are the following:

  –     Vegetables and legumes/beans- tomato, avocado, mushrooms, red kidney beans, lima beans, tofu and more
  – Fruit
  –      Grain- (cereal) mostly wholegrain and/or high cereal fibre varieties.
  –      Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds and                             legumes/beans.
  – Milk, yoghurt cheese and/or alternatives, mostly reduced fat.

Five important compounds in the food groups

Carbohydrates- This group contains foods such as pasta, rice and more. The first few important chemical compounds in carbohydrate are glucose, glycogen and starch.

Glucose: Glucose is just a simple sugar. It’s made out of 6 carbon atoms, 12 hydrogen atoms and 6 oxygen atoms.
Glycogen: Glycogen is a polysaccharide made of  glucose that serves as a form of energy storage in organisms
Starch: Starch is a polymeric carbohydrate containing a large number of glucose glycosidic bonds(bond that joins carbohydrate molecule to another group)

Protein- This group contains food such as meat, fish and eggs as well as vegetable protein, nuts, beans, peas and more. The first  few important chemical compounds in Proteins are Lipid, Glucose and DNA.

Lipid: A Lipid is made out of a diverse group of organic compounds and it includes oils, fats, hormones.
Glucose: Glucose is just a simple sugar. It’s made out of 6 carbon atoms, 12 hydrogen atoms and 6 oxygen atoms.
DNA: A Deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA) is an organic chemical of complex molecular structure and is found in cells named  prokaryotic and eukaryotic.

Milk and dairy products- This group contains food such as milk, yoghurt, milkshakes, cheese and more. Milk and dairy products do not contain any chemical compounds.

Fruit and vegetables. This group contains food such as apple, banana, pears, broccoli, cauliflower and more. Fruit and vegetables do not contain any chemical compounds.

Fats and sugars. This group contains food such as oils, cream, salad dressings, chocolate, crisps, sugary soft drinks and more. Fats and sugar contain the chemical compounds fats.

Vitamins- Vitamins can be obtained from foods such as carrots, spinach, kale, collard greens and more. Vitamins do not contain any    chemical compounds. They do contain other compounds. Vitamins B is the most important one. Vitamin B helps you maintain metabolism, muscle tone, and a sharp mind.

FUNCTION OF WATER IN US

Every organism needs water to stay alive. 70% of our body weight is water. Our body uses water in all its cells, organs, and tissues to mainly maintain its temperature. Our body loses water through breathing, sweating, and digestion, that is the reason why we need to rehydrate by drinking fluids and eating foods that contain water.
Some people believe that you need to hydrate 8-ounces glasses of water per day to be healthy but that is not totally true. The amount of water needed in our body depends on our age, how much we exercise, and how hot and dry the climate is. Not everybody provides 8- ounces glasses of water to their body every day but still are healthy.

Energy

The human needs energy to move, to work and more. Some people drink coffee to observe energy while some energy drinks. The amount of energy needed for the human body depends on your age.

MAN
The average adult male body needs 2500 calories per day to maintain their weight and stay healthy.

WOMEN
The average adult female body needs 2000 calories per day to maintain their weight and stay healthy

CHILD

The amount of energy needed for a child depends on his/her gender. A average boy with the age of 7 needs 1600 calories per day while a girl of 7 needs 1500 calories. A average boy with the age of 10 needs 2000 calories while a girl of 10 needs 1900 calories.

BODY MASS INDEX

The body mass index, also known as BMI is a experiment to calculate if your weight is healthy. If men has a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9, it is considered healthy. If men has a BMI of 25 to 29.9, it is considered overweight. And if men has a BMI of 30+, it is considered obese.

How do you calculate a adult’s BMI?

The formula to calculate a adult’s BMI are the following:

Divide your weight in kilograms (kg) by your height in metres (m)
Then dive your the answer by your height again to get your BMI

My personal BMI

The average BMI of a 14 years old teenager is from 16-22.6 kg/m^2. According to the website bmi-calculator.html, my BMI is 16.73 kg/m^2 and my weight is healthy.
