There are many types of oils. Some are plant based, some are crude, and some are both. Oils can affect the growth of many things. Plants are commonly exposed to the threats of oils. Humans use oils all throughout their daily routine. Cooking oil, such as vegetable oil, is used in most foods in restaurants and cooking. Motor oil is used in cars to reduce friction between car parts. Oil greatly affects the life of living things, not always in a good way. Oil can be a threat to nature. When oil gets into some plants, they struggle to live and sometimes die. When oil gets into the system of a plant, the process of photosynthesis is slowed down. All plants take in nutrients from the ground or their surroundings. Some plants can be dozens of meters high, while some can be near invisible. Oil can effect all of these plants. The scientific name for the polka dot plant is the hypoestes phyllostachya. Polka dot plants come in many colors and varieties, including pink,white, silver, red, and sometimes a mix. This particular plant is a non-invasive and non-aggressive species. That means that if they are put in a place with other plants, they will not invade or choke the other plants. Their seeds germinate in temperatures from 21-27 degrees Celsius.Polka dot plants are deer resistant. Polka dot plants are perennial herbs, which means they last a long time. Though they are perennial, they can be treated as annuals, die and resprout every year. As they get old, their stems become wood-like. These plants originate in Madagascar. They would sprout in low-lighted areas and grow from 15 cm to 46 cm. In Madagascar, they would prefer indirect sunlight, so they could thrive and grow high. Polka dots plants grow well indoors, they are often used for show in houses. Oftentimes, to prevent overgrowth of the plants, homeowners will trim or pinch off the top half inch or so from the top. Once pinched the polka dot plant will bush out, forming new leaves and stems.These plants are known to not be able to cope well with chemicals.  Crisco peanut oil contains peanut oil, TBHQ (tertiary butylhydroquinone), citric acid, and dimethyl silicone. Some of the additives (anything other than peanut oil) are harmful substances. TBHQ has been put through several laboratory tests. It is often found on Chicken McNuggets from McDonald’s. TBHQ is used to preserve foods that have often times been processed. TBHQ is also used to keep color in some foods containing iron. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has set boundaries on the amount of this product to be used. According to the Centers for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) when this additive was added to the food of rats, tumors, or swelling, was found to occur. According to the National Library of Medicine (NLM) vision loss was also reported to be found when humans ate it with their food. Further testing reported in strange behavior by humans(may not have been caused by TBHQ). If these were the effects TBHQ had on mammals, plants should also be effected in a way. Citric acid is an acid found in citrus fruits. It used to be made strictly from extracting citrus from citrus fruits and using that. Now, sugar is fed to black mold, which produces citric acid. Black mold is highly dangerous and can cause sickness or death if inhaled. Dimethyl silicone is an anti-foaming spray used in cooking. It is used in paints, cosmetics, and paper. The effects of dimethyl silicone on test subjects has not yet been thoroughly researched, so no extensive lab research is available. If mammals react in a negative way, plants should have at least some reaction. Crisco vegetable oil contains only soybean oil. Soybean oil is believed to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in humans. Cardiovascular disease occurs when soybean oil is made it is often times bleached to add a more desirable and edible looks. It is removed with hexane and treated with chemicals to reduce the smell. When mice were given vegetable oil, they became obese and eventually got diabetes. In other testing, when different rats were given a variety of different oils, the ones with soybean oil grew the most in fat and weight. Vegetable oil is mostly polyunsaturated fat. Polyunsaturated fat can reduce the bad cholesterol levels in humans blood. Plants contain cholesterol that is called phytosterols.  Motor oil is considered to be a crude oil. It contains about 95% of petroleum and/or synthetic chemicals. The other 5% of the motor oil is from additives. Motor oil starts as a crude oil then is refined to make a base oil. Crude oil contains hydrocarbons (any solution of hydrogen and carbon atoms) and plant and animal fossils from millions of years ago. Petroleum is used to make many resources such as diesel fuels, gasoline, kerosene, greases, wax, asphalt and much more. Petroleum is found underground in pools or reservoirs. Zinc is one of the most common additives. Zinc is used to benefit humans in many ways. It is used to reduce acne and pimples. It is used to prevent cancer, treat eczema, and relieve fatigue. There are many more healthy benefits of zinc. Even with these benefits, motor oil contains less than 5% of it. Motor oil is not meant to be ingested. Though, if ingested, there will be minimal harm done to a human. Some results of drinking or ingesting clean motor oil could be nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. Used motor oil, on the other hand, contains metals, and more chemicals that were produced after going through intense heat and chemical reactions through the friction of fast moving car parts. Ingesting this could result in could result in mutations (occurs when tested on cells). Touching used motor oil could lead to skin cancer. The polka dot plant, or hypoestes phyllostachya, is a household plant that is not resistant to chemicals. When oils are applied to plants like this damage can be done. Plants such as the polka dot plant will have exposure to cooking oils if they are present in areas where these oils are being used.
